This one’s been played out a lot by the usual suspects but I’m really in two minds about it. Normally when someone takes a decent instrumental dance track and sticks a vocal over it the results are pretty pants but it sells bucket loads and hits the charts and soundtracks 20 different Ibiza reality shows that summer.
Whoever had the idea to get Jarvis Cocker to do a vocal to go over an Erol Alkan and Boys Noize track probably thought it was anti-commercial somehow, especially because the delivered vocal is dark and moody. And yet just the idea of it is so commercial it’s hard to ignore somehow.
Part of me thinks it’s this year’s Insomnia, destined to be huge and ultimately very annoying, and part of me thinks it’s actually not a bad weird pop song of sorts. After a few listens I still can’t make up my mind whether I like it or not, and that’s unusual.
Have a listen to it yourself:
(This video might disappear because it’s not from the label, so if it does I’ll find another source.)
